Crank Caviar (Dance Area!)

GoGo music is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and for five decades, go-go bands in the DC area have brought crowds to their feet with irresistible percussive covers of classics and contemporary hits. In late 2022, 7070 Sound founder Malachai Johns — former guitarist for the Northeast Groovers and mastermind behind the Billboard-charting go-go band Mambo Sauce — launched Crank Caviar, a series of go-go cover singles and videos, producing fresh takes on songs like Foo Fighters' "My Hero" and Usher's "U Remind Me."

Following the rotating-lineup model of acts like Snarky Puppy and Scary Pockets, Crank Caviar draws its musicians from a deep pool of DMV talent — artists who've also performed with Wale, Snoop Dogg, New Kids on the Block, Ari Lennox, Kelly Rowland, and go-go staples like Rare Essence, Backyard Band, and Black Alley.

Johns calls Crank Caviar "a rotating cast of the best musicians in the DMV, assembled to perform go-go versions of your favorite songs" — the go-go answer to Postmodern Jukebox and Scary Pockets, delivered with polished sound and engaging video.
