Apex Arts is proud to present An Evening of Jazz & Commercial Music with Jeff Coffin & Rashawn Ross on Tuesday, April 14, at Ram’s Head on Stage in Annapolis. The performance begins at 7:00 p.m., with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. This dynamic evening will feature an electrifying program influenced by jazz, rock, R&B, and blues, led by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame horn section for the Dave Matthews Band.
Three-time Grammy Award winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin, celebrated for his virtuosic technique and adventurous improvisation, joins forces with renowned studio trumpeter Rashawn Ross, whose powerful, soulful sound is shaped by funk, hip-hop, and R&B, to create a high-energy, genre-defying experience. Presented by Apex Arts, the concert will feature select students from the magnet program’s jazz and commercial music program performing alongside Coffin and Ross. This all-ages event takes place in an intimate setting at one of Annapolis’s premier live music venues; alcohol will not be sold.

Saxophonist Jeff Coffin and trumpet player Rashawn Ross comprise the Dave Matthews Band horn section and joined the band in 2008 and 2006, respectively. On October 19th, 2024, they were both inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Dave Matthews Band and are among very few horn players to receive this distinguished honor. In 2025, the band was ranked in the top five (#4) most popular artists of the millennium based on ticket sales. It is also the only band in history to have seven consecutive albums debut at #1 on the Billboard charts.
In addition to his work with Dave Matthews Band, Jeff has earned acclaim for his 14 years as a member of Béla Fleck & the Flecktones, as well as his 23+ solo projects. Coffin’s approach to the saxophone is marked by a fearless sense of exploration, fusing elements of jazz, funk, world music, and rock into a style that is uniquely his own.
A 3x Grammy Award winner, Coffin has toured the world, captivating audiences with his powerful, emotive playing. In addition to his work as a performer, Coffin is deeply committed to music education, teaching at Vanderbilt University and presenting well over 400 workshops and clinics around the globe. He is also the founder of the independent record label Ear Up Records and co-founder of AfricaNashville, which promotes cross-cultural relationships between celebrated African and American artists in Nashville, TN. Coffin’s passion for sharing knowledge has made him a respected mentor to aspiring musicians everywhere.
Jeff is a Yamaha Performing Artist & Clinician, a Boston Sax Shop Ambassador, and a JodyJazz Artist.
A versatile trumpeter and arranger, Rashawn Ross was born on the island of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, graduating in 2000. Rashawn started his professional career with Afro-Cuban hip hop band Yerba Buena, then joined funk pioneers Lettuce and Soulive shortly thereafter, before joining Dave Matthews Band in 2006.
Outside of Dave Matthews Band, Rashawn has compiled a lengthy resume as a freelance trumpeter and horn arranger. Rashawn’s trumpet and horn arranging were featured on Ariana Grande’s 2025 number-one charting album, “eternal sunshine deluxe: brighter days ahead,” on the song, “dandelion.” He has also worked with Lady Gaga in her big band for her Las Vegas “Jazz and Piano” residency and her 2024 album, “Harlequin.” His credits also include Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Usher, Babyface, Pharrell Williams, and many others.
Rashawn is a Bach Brass performing artist and clinician, a Trumcor Mutes performing artist and has a signature line of mouthpieces made by Greg Black Mouthpieces.
